People both depend on and impact nature. Our societies and economies are built on the foundations of nature's contributions to people at local and global scales. Thriving nature also has intrinsic value. Reflecting on the importance of healthy ecosystems, our strategy for 2026-2029 focuses on catalyzing action to achieve the ambitions of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and its 2050 vision of living in harmony with nature.
Direct drivers of nature loss are the processes that contribute to reduction and degradation of biodiversity. These are both rapid and long-term changes in the use of land and the sea, overharvesting from nature, escalating climate change, ongoing pollution, and the uncontrolled spread of species outside of their natural range.
The underlying causes of many of these drivers are found in social, political and economic systems. Addressing these underlying causes requires working with systems and imbalances of power to develop transformative solutions that drive structural changes to the way the world works.
“Our refreshed strategy sets out our priorities to deliver on our mission to develop knowledge and capacity to improve the state of nature for all. The strategy sets out our contribution to catalyzing the transformative changes needed in the world to deliver positive outcomes for people and nature - including through our role in partnering to co-develop and scale-up solutions to the world’s most pressing nature-related challenges.”
Neville Ash, Director, UNEP-WCMC
Our new 4-year strategy covers a critical period in which urgent action is needed to ensure progress towards achieving the 2030 global targets and putting the world on a pathway towards the vision of living in harmony with nature.
Living in harmony with nature is a vision that requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach. We will continue to embrace collaborative working with a diversity of partners, including:
Through engaging this array of partners, we will enable policy and decision making across sectors to reflect the very best knowledge and practice. These outcomes will take a variety of forms, from policies advancing sustainable development to financial flows aligning with ambitions for nature.
Our areas of focus in delivering impacts for nature and people are:
Our impacts depend on our partnerships as well as our strong organizational, operational and financial foundations. We will ensure excellence in project management, financial management and operations, and will retain, grow and diversify our sources of funding.
We are embracing advances in technology, including artificial intelligence, to ensure that our innovation, research, science and technology is relevant to the real world and can be applied across geographies and scales. We will also deliver high impact, compelling communications, advocating for the systemic change in the world that we know is necessary for delivering the impacts of our strategy.
"Our greatest strength is the knowledge, expertise and dedication of our 200+ staff team, underpinned by strong operational foundations. Our refreshed strategy recognizes it is this combination that will deliver lasting impact for nature and people"
